Zohran Mamdani’s Meteoric Rise: The 34-Year-Old Progressive Shaking Up New York’s Gubernatorial Race

Gold Oyeniran | October 23, 2025

In the heart of New York politics, a David-vs-Goliath battle is unfolding—and it’s captivating the nation. On one side: Andrew Cuomo, the 67-year-old political heavyweight, former governor, and undisputed kingmaker of the Empire State Democratic machine. On the other: Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old progressive firebrand, state assemblyman, and social media savant who’s turning the race upside down with bold ideas and viral savvy.

As the race heats up ahead of the 2026 primaries, Mamdani isn’t just running—he’s surging. Polls show him closing the gap with Cuomo’s once-insurmountable lead, fueled by a groundswell of young voters, grassroots energy, and a relentless digital campaign that’s making Cuomo’s old-school tactics look downright prehistoric.

From Queens to the Governor’s Mansion: Mamdani’s Unlikely Ascent

Zohran Mamdani isn’t your typical politician. Born in Uganda to Indian parents, he immigrated to New York as a child and cut his teeth as a hip-hop artist before diving into activism and politics. Elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 representing Astoria, Queens, Mamdani quickly became a DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) darling, championing rent control, universal healthcare, and police reform.

But it’s his gubernatorial bid that’s catapulted him to stardom. Armed with a smartphone and an unfiltered voice, Mamdani has racked up millions of views on TikTok and Instagram Reels, breaking down complex policy into bite-sized, meme-worthy explainers. His latest viral hit? A 60-second takedown of Cuomo’s ties to real estate donors, set to a trap beat, that garnered 2.7 million views overnight.

“I’m not here to manage decline,” Mamdani declared at a packed rally in Brooklyn last week. “I’m here to build a New York where rent isn’t a luxury, healthcare isn’t a privilege, and a good life isn’t reserved for the connected few.”

Cuomo’s Empire Strikes Back

Andrew Cuomo, of course, is no stranger to the spotlight—or controversy. Resigning in disgrace in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, he staged a dramatic comeback, reclaiming his throne as the Democratic establishment’s favorite son. With deep pockets, union endorsements, and a Rolodex thicker than the Manhattan phone book, Cuomo has painted Mamdani as an unelectable “socialist showboat.”

But cracks are showing. Cuomo’s campaign has been hammered by low turnout at events and a string of gaffes, including a tone-deaf ad boasting about his “three-term record” that conspicuously omits his resignation. Insiders whisper of donor jitters as Mamdani’s small-dollar fundraising explodes—$4.2 million in the last quarter alone, dwarfing Cuomo’s per-donor average.

The Issues Driving the Surge

What’s fueling Mamdani’s momentum? A perfect storm of policy populism tailored to New York’s frustrations:

Housing Crisis: Mamdani’s “Homes Guarantee” pledges to build 800,000 affordable units and impose a “millionaire’s tax” on luxury developments.

Subway Overhaul: Free fares for low-income riders and a public takeover of the MTA.

Climate Action: A “Green New York” plan banning new fossil fuel hookups by 2030.

Criminal Justice: Ending cash bail and investing in community-led violence interruption.

Cuomo counters with pragmatic tweaks, but voters seem hungry for the real deal. A Siena College poll released yesterday shows Mamdani leading 48-44 among Democrats under 45, with independents breaking his way too.

Social Media: The Great Equalizer

If Cuomo’s weapon is money, Mamdani’s is the algorithm. His team—mostly volunteers under 30—has mastered the art of “doomscrolling activism.” Threads dissecting Cuomo’s donor list go mega-viral on X, while Instagram Lives draw thousands tuning in from bodegas to high-rises.

“Andrew Cuomo texts his donors. I text my voters,” Mamdani quipped in a recent post that’s been shared 150,000 times.

What’s Next for the Empire State Shake-Up?

With the primary still months away, Cuomo’s camp is hitting reset: more retail politicking, targeted ads, and whispers of a running mate steal. But Mamdani’s momentum feels unstoppable. National Democrats are watching closely—could this be the blueprint for taking on entrenched power in blue states?

New Yorkers, long resigned to machine politics, are buzzing. As one Astoria barista told me: “Cuomo’s yesterday. Zohran’s tomorrow.”

Will the young disruptor topple the old guard? Or will experience prevail? One thing’s certain: this race is redefining what it means to run for governor in the social media age.

What do you think? Is Mamdani the future of NY Dems, or is Cuomo’s machine too strong? Drop your takes in the comments below!
