Over 450,000 Nigerians Apply for Less Than 10,000 Federal Civil Service Jobs

An estimated 450,000 Nigerians have submitted applications for limited vacancies in the Federal Civil Service, following a nationwide recruitment drive initiated by the Federal Government in January 2025.

The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) had earlier publicised the commencement of the recruitment process through an official advertisement endorsed by its Director of Recruitment and Appointment, Ogaba Ede. The advertorial outlined more than 70 available roles across various ministries and departments.

The positions advertised spanned a broad range of professional fields, including but not limited to: Administrative Officer, Planning Officer, Programme Analyst, Procurement Officer, Senior Computer Engineer, Dental Officer, Population Programme Officer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Education Officer, and Senior Youth Development Officer. Additional roles comprised Fisheries Officer, Animal Health Technologist, Sports Officer, State Counsel, Nursing Officer, Radiographer, Higher Technical Officer, Dietician, Dental Therapist, Assistant Education Officer, Auditor, Cultural Officer, Printing Officer, Tourism Officer, and Senior Instructor.

Further specialised roles such as Psychologist, Biomedical Engineer, Surveyor, Aerodrome Engineer, Computer Engineer, Geologist, Statistician, and Foreign Affairs Officer were also included in the recruitment exercise.

According to the FCSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Taiwo Hassan, the application process was restricted to qualified Nigerians, who were directed to apply through the official recruitment portal of the commission. Initially scheduled to close on March 10, the application deadline was later extended to March 17, 2025, to accommodate more applicants.

Despite this extension, many prospective candidates experienced significant challenges accessing the recruitment platform, with complaints of technical hitches reported during the registration window.

A senior official within the commission, who provided an update on the recruitment exercise under the condition of anonymity, disclosed that although the number of applicants exceeded 450,000, available vacancies remain below 10,000. Only those who are successfully shortlisted will proceed to the next stage of the process.

Shortlisted candidates will receive official notifications and are expected to participate in a computer-based test (CBT), which will be administered in their respective states of residence. The examination process is designed to be final, with no provisions for rescheduling. Candidates will receive their test results immediately upon completion.

Meanwhile, the FCSC has indicated that further details regarding the recruitment process will be communicated to the public in due course.
