Nigeria’s Political Arena Heats Up: Atiku, Obi, and the Road to 2027

Gold Oyeniran | October 9, 2025

As Nigeria navigates economic reforms and security challenges under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the political landscape is already buzzing with maneuvering for the 2027 general elections. The opposition, in particular, is stirring the pot, with big names like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi’s Labour Party making headlines. Here’s a deep dive into the latest developments shaping the race for Aso Rock.

Atiku’s Bold Move on Nnamdi Kanu Sparks Firestorm

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Atiku Abubakar has ignited a fierce debate by calling for the release or trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in custody since 2021, facing charges tied to separatist activities, and a court recently rejected his bail application. Atiku’s public stance, urging the government to either free Kanu or expedite his trial, has drawn sharp criticism. Many on platforms like X have branded it a “self-destructive error,” accusing him of pandering to IPOB’s base for political gain while ignoring the group’s violent history. Critics argue this move risks alienating voters outside the Southeast, where IPOB’s influence is strongest.

Atiku, however, didn’t stop there. In a surprising twist, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate signaled he’d step aside in 2027 if a younger, stronger contender emerges in the party’s primaries. This openness to passing the torch suggests Atiku, now in his late 70s, is recalibrating his strategy—perhaps to mentor a new generation or avoid another bruising electoral loss. But with the PDP still grappling with internal fractures, can Atiku unify the opposition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)?

Labour Party Eyes Datti Baba-Ahmed as Obi’s Successor

Meanwhile, the Labour Party (LP), which shook up Nigeria’s political scene in 2023 with Peter Obi’s youth-driven campaign, is already looking ahead. Reports indicate the party is positioning Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s 2023 running mate, as a potential flagbearer for 2027. Obi’s near-win last election galvanized young voters and urban centers, but the LP seems keen to refresh its ticket. Datti, a former senator known for his calm demeanor and intellectual appeal, could broaden the party’s northern base while maintaining its reformist credentials. However, some question whether he can replicate Obi’s charisma and grassroots momentum.

Early Campaigning Raises Eyebrows

The flurry of political posturing—two years before the election—has sparked concerns about governance taking a backseat. Posts on X reflect public frustration, with users slamming politicians for “doing nothing for 8 years” before eyeing Senate seats or higher office. Others praise Tinubu’s strategic moves, like appointing Igbo’s May Agbamuche-Mbu as acting INEC chair, as “well-played cards” to balance ethnic representation. Yet, the early campaign frenzy risks deepening voter cynicism, especially as Nigerians grapple with a cost-of-living crisis fueled by inflation and fuel subsidy cuts.

What’s at Stake?

As Atiku and the LP test the waters, Nigeria’s political future hangs in the balance. The opposition’s ability to coalesce around a unified candidate could determine whether Tinubu’s APC faces a real challenge in 2027. For now, Atiku’s Kanu remarks and the LP’s succession plans are stoking debate, division, and anticipation. With economic hardship and insecurity dominating public concerns, the road to 2027 will test whether these leaders can offer solutions—or just more rhetoric.
