Global and Nigerian Politics: A Snapshot of October 2025

Gold Oyeniran | October 30, 2025

As the world navigates a complex political landscape, October 2025 brings a mix of diplomatic breakthroughs, escalating tensions, and domestic shifts. From global leaders making headlines to Nigeria’s evolving political and economic scene, here’s a concise look at the latest developments.

Global Politics: Trade, Truces, and Tensions

President Donald Trump’s Asia tour is grabbing attention, blending high-stakes diplomacy with trade disputes. Arriving in Japan on October 28 amid a 28-day U.S. government shutdown, Trump met Japan’s new prime minister and addressed U.S. business leaders at an APEC luncheon in South Korea. Protests flared in Gyeongju, South Korea, against Trump’s tariffs on Southeast Asian nations, with locals decrying their “oppressive” impact. Trump claimed credit for brokering a truce between Thailand and Cambodia, earning praise in Kuala Lumpur, though skeptics argue he’s inflating his role. Investors are cautiously hopeful as Trump prepares to meet China’s Xi Jinping, potentially easing a trade war where tariffs average 15% on major partners. However, past “truces” suggest limited breakthroughs.

In the Middle East, a fragile Gaza ceasefire holds after Israel released 1,900 Palestinian prisoners for 20 hostages, though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent strikes signal ongoing volatility. Turkey’s defense minister warned of escalation risks as Istanbul hosts talks to strengthen the Doha-brokered truce.

Elsewhere, Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya secured a disputed election win, fueling unrest amid violence and corruption allegations. In Brazil, a deadly raid on a Rio de Janeiro drug gang left 60 suspects and four officers dead. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman showcased the kingdom’s financial influence at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, deepening U.S. ties. Social media buzz on platforms like X highlights Trump’s “pop assassin” persona in pop culture and growing generational divides in global politics.

Nigeria: Reforms, Rivalries, and Resilience

Nigeria scored a major victory with its removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) “grey list” at the Paris plenary, easing financial restrictions and boosting investor confidence after years of scrutiny over money laundering and terror financing. This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, including a military leadership overhaul to address persistent insecurity.

The political scene is heating up. In the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Minister Kabiru Turaki is vying for national chairman at the November 15-16 convention in Ibadan, amid internal rifts. In Kano, over 500 New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling strategic shifts ahead of 2027 elections. Speculation swirls in Bayelsa over Governor Douye Diri’s rumored APC defection, drawing mixed reactions from PDP leaders. Kogi Governor Usman Ododo remains confident in APC’s grip on Ekiti for upcoming polls.

Security remains a concern. The National Orientation Agency (NOA) warned of foreign propaganda risks, cautioning that Nigeria could face destabilization akin to Libya or Iraq. The presidency swiftly dismissed coup rumors as baseless. In Rivers State, NDLEA officials faced heavy gunfire while thwarting a drug kingpin’s escape.

On the economic front, Nigeria is attracting attention with $1.3 billion in Chinese lithium investments and Ethiopia launching a second daily flight to Abuja. Social media discussions spotlight youth-led movements like #EndSARS, emphasizing African youth’s demand for accountability, alongside debates over tribalism in commerce, sparked by a viral Bokku Mart clip.

Looking Ahead

From global trade talks to Nigeria’s political and economic maneuvers, October 2025 underscores a world in flux. As leaders navigate fragile truces and domestic pressures, the interplay of reform, rivalry, and resilience will shape the path forward. Stay tuned for more updates as these stories unfold.
